Phew... Getting a working set of teams has been tough!!
April 27, 2016
Following the feedback from last year and conversations with BSUK, we set out this year to create separate Men and Women leagues and attract more players.
We were not sure it would work, how many teams we could end up with or even how many players.
We set up this web site, a Twitter account, revamped the Facebook page and created a registration and mailing service.
We ran adverts on "Wanted", had BSUK send out mail shots and update our Facebook pages regularly.
The result??..... Well, a bit mixed to be honest and we are expecting to take the experience and do better next year!!
The men's league has 5 teams with almost all of the players who registered allocated to one of those teams. We think the teams are as balanced as possible and the league should be hard fought.
The Women's league has 4 teams and we have managed to attract a whole new number of players from all over.
We have expanded out onto 3 diamonds and plan to go to 4 next year if possible
We have attracted more fastpitch umpires and will have a BASU plate and field umpire for almost all the games
The Not so Good
Somehow the registration message got mangled. Although the majority of players did register, some didn't or thought that last years registrations were sufficient. We will look at our messaging more next year and make sure everybody knows they must register directly with the league by the deadline if they want to play
We didn't have obvious captains for the women's teams - which meant forming the 2 new teams for the league did not happen until far too late. We need captains to emerge this year so that we have teams allocated to them earlier and messages can be sent to players earlier
Commitment from the women's players has made it very difficult to decide if there are 4 teams or 5 teams. It has ended up with 4 teams but this means those teams are a bit large and will cut down on game time for players. We need a way next year to move to earlier commitment so that the correct number of right sized teams can be formed.
The men's teams are just a little too large. 15 players per team are too many so maybe we will go to 6 teams next year.
Out final's day is a little disconnected from the main league because we are trying to accommodate a women's tournament on the weekend that we should have played. It means that players may not come back to play the finals weekend. Next year we will make sure the finals day is immediately after the last week of the league fixtures.
We have a league and will be playing good quality Fast Pitch Softball from 30th April!! Thank you very much to all that have helped us get this far. Please drop by the camper van and say hi and give us feedback or improvements you would like to see next year.
If you have not registered with us, please leave an email address so we can send you a survey form at the end of the season.
