Down to the final outs!

As the 10 teams that make up the Men’s and Women’s Fastpitch leagues drifted away on Sunday evening they will reflect on a tough weekend. Fastpitch is demanding physically but also mentally and keeping it together is essential for success. As the weekend bore on there was plenty of good play but also notable lapses of concentration leading to one or two dramatic outcomes.

On the women’s side the Mix continue their winning ways and carry their perfect record into the final weekend. The Barbarians hold a narrow lead in the standings over the Angels, and have a game in hand, but it will go down to the wire. For the Free Agents and the Cardiff Celts some of the games got away on them this weekend but as always this only tells half the story. Both teams are developing and there was plenty of good and entertaining play. Come the final Sunday, expect the Angels and the Barbarians to vie for places, The Free Agents and Celts to continue to craft their game and although the Mix can celebrate already, they will know other teams fancy a scalp if they let their guard down. 

On the Men’s side things are tight and the situation going into the final Sunday is intriguing. League leaders Stags have dropped just 2 games, but the Meteors and GBu23 are close behind. 2 wins from 3 should do it, however Stag’s ace Damon Brown is out for the rest of the season with a broken finger and recent tussles with both the Meteors and the GB u23’s suggest it’s not over yet!

In a round up of play from the weekend credit must go to the GB u23’s who once again battled the Meteors on Sunday for a good win and followed that up with a comprehensive dismantling of the Stags! The GB u18’s continue to improve. We know they are going to ‘happen’ before long and a nod to the Strays who are beginning to gel into a team worth watching. They are in every game now and took a healthy win and a draw from Sunday.
September 12 will be interesting. There is still plenty to play for!
